Research in the Alverson lab is focused on understanding the evolutionary history of diatoms, a species-rich lineage of photosynthetic algae. We use genome-scale data to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships and then use those phylogenetic hypotheses to address questions about diversification patterns, adaptation to low salinity habitats, genome evolution, and basic questions related to the taxonomy and systematics of different diatom lineages.
